Conscription of Laborers. 1 Kings 5: 13 – 18

Work is central to life in our world. Perhaps too important.

Although work is important, I don’t think it is central to life. Work to live is what makes sense to me. God has so blessed me to be able to live this motto. I do not live to work in the sense of earning more and more money. I just need enough to live.

What I enjoy is the work of the mind, discovering the way humans think and behave. But if everyone lived in their mind the way that I do, nothing would get done in a practical sense.

King Solomon used forced laborers, which I guess means slaves, but even they worked less than the time they spent engaged in family life. One month on, two months off, was their work structure.

Building the temple required masses of resources. The work doesn’t cease, just as grass doesn’t stop growing and needs a mower. It’s a shared burden. Otherwise, the weight of work can crush the worker.

God knows this.
