Queen Vashti’s Refusal. Esther 1: 10 – 22

The Lord is showing me some obscure people this week. Yesterday, Sheba. Today,
Queen Vashti. But the theme of revolt and refusal seemed to go together.
King Xerxes wanted to show Queen Vashti off to his drunken friends. So proud was he of her. The Queen Vashti wasn’t having it, so she refused. King Xerxes lost it and asked advice of others who didn’t want to set precedent for themselves.
So, Queen Vashti lost her stature.
This is how God is with us. He wants to show us off, to be shown off through us.
Yet how many times do we refuse?
I know that I am terribly guilty of forgetting who is in power. In my self-absorption, I can think my needs or wants are more important than what God has asked of me.
Xerxes advisers were not so much concerned with what happened to their king as much as they were about their own standing. Couched in their admiration for his accolades, they convinced him to change law.
How often do we come before God in such a manner?
